To begin with.
What is CBD? It’s a question that people keep asking us more & more. You may have heard it being described as a cannabinoid and cannabidiol, and confusingly both are correct.
The first and most important thing you need to know is that CBD is a compound found in the cannabis plant. It’s one of over one hundred different cannabinoids that have been identified so far. Cannabinoids have since been discovered in other biological systems including our own, but we’ll get to that later.
Step 1: What is CBD?
Where CBD comes from
As we now know Cannabis contains cannabinoids. Cannabis is actually the term for a family of plants, which are usually split into two distinct categories: sativa and indica. These terms are used in titles for different strains.
- Hemp refers to strains of cannabis grown for industrial use like: rope, paper and CBD.
- Marijuana refers to plants grown for recreational use. This is why marijuana is often used to refer to cannabis as a drug.
We already know that there are lots of different cannabinoids you can find in the cannabis family, but there are two key ones that help distinguish between hemp and marijuana.
There are lots of cannabinoids in the cannabis family, however the most famous to distinguish between marijuana and hemp is THC and CBD.
THC is the compound that induces most of the effects typically associated with smoking cannabis, and is found in high amounts in marijuana.
The second most prevalent cannabinoid is CBD. Research shows that CBD will not get you high, and is proven safe for human use. CBD is typically found in high percentages in hemp, with very little THC. It is the balance of these two chemicals that largely dictates a cannabis plant’s purpose. All of our products are within the allowed amount of THC under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Misuse of Drug Regulations Act 2001.
Types of CBD in our products
CBD isolate is a white, powdery substance that is the pure CBD molecule. CBD isolate does not contain phytocannabinoids like a full or broad-spectrum CBD oil product.
A full-spectrum CBD product refers to cannabis that is extracted from the entire marijuana plant. Not only does it contain the CBD molecule, but it also includes other beneficial cannabinoids, including legal amounts of THC, CBN, THCA, CBG, and CBC.
Consumers can also purchase nano CBD, which is a compound where the CBD molecules are shrunk and changed to a water-based form. This form of CBD oil is ideal for creams because the beneficial CBD can easily pass through the skin in this form.
A broad spectrum CBD oil will contain all of the phytocannabinoids presents in its full-spectrum cousins, but it does not contain THC.
CBD & the body
CBD is very similar to chemicals your body already produces. These endocannabinoids (a cannabinoid the body produces internally) are part of a network of chemicals and receptors known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The ECS acts as the body’s assistant manager, with receptors throughout most of the major organs, the nervous system, and the immune system. Essentially it ensures that the body is operating in a state of balance, known as homeostasis. This involves checking that everything is working between key parameters, such as temperature, metabolism and pressure.
When we introduce CBD into the body, the ECS is its sole means of interacting with us. In fact, because it’s so similar, CBD is able to support the ECS quite easily. That’s why we’re so confident in CBD as a natural compound that can be safely introduced to the body.
The laws around CBD are constantly changing and opening up. However, currently businesses selling CBD can not legally discuss any medical claims, no matter how legitimate these might be. That’s why at Safe Way we never make these claims or refences to the effects. We just provide the safest and best products on the market and encourage you to undertake your own research from respected sources.
Step 2: How do I take CBD?
CBD ingestion methods can actually have a surprising impact on how it interacts with your body. That’s why we’ve broken this section down into the different ingestion methods just to keep things nice and clear.
There are plenty of other additional details that can alter how your body processes any given compound, including your weight, age and metabolism, but the ingestion method is a big deciding factor that you have complete control over. Read on to see which method is right for you.
CBD Ingestion methods available at Safe Way.
Oils and tinctures
These liquids, usually oils, are infused with CBD and placed under the tongue with a dropper. Alternatively, you can mix into your favourite food or drink. The oral mucosa is full of tiny capillaries that absorb the compounds quickly. Oils and tinctures are a good choice for anyone who can’t take pills or want the most widely used form of CBD ingestion.
Skincare, creams, balms and lotions
CBD-infused creams can be used on the skin and to target specific muscle areas. We have a massive variety of quality skincare products for CBD absorption. Balms, Creams, Massage oils and other topical CBD products can activate the skin’s natural cannabinoid receptors. Baths alone are very relaxing, but combining a bath with a CBD bath bomb means CBD is absorbed through the skin while you sit back and relax. Find what fits with your lifestyle.
Gummies are one of the most popular ways to take CBD. They’re affordable, portable, discrete, and tasty. There’s also no guesswork involved: You know exactly what dose you’re taking. Not a fan of Gummies? Don’t worry we have gone out of our way to find the tastiest CBD-infused treats on the market in all variations and flavours.
Drinks are a tasty and refreshing way to get your dose of CBD, start your day right with a CBD Coffee or English Tea. When CBD is taken in the form of food or drinks, it has to go through the digestive system where it is likely to be held longer. This way, it can gradually produce the needed effect over a more extended time period.
Inhaling vaporized CBD oil, like e-cigs for CBD, is the fastest way to experience effects. Compounds are inhaled and absorbed directly from the lungs into the bloodstream. You can smoke CBD E-liquids with most industry vaping devices. Alternatively, we supply a range of disposable vape devices for you to try this method easily. It is still undecided if vaping does damage to delicate lung tissue. Proceed with caution if you choose to vape CBD.
Capsules and pills
Capsules are one of the easiest methods of absorption, however this isn’t for everyone.
There’s one drawback with capsule forms, the time from ingestion to onset of effect can take a while. However, with Capsules you can measure your dosage to perfection with ease.
Step 3: What's my dosage?
You know what CBD is and which methods of ingestion/absorption you will prefer. However, one of the most important factors to decide before purchasing your CBD product is the CBD concentration to go with.
Finding the right dosage is actually one of the most difficult areas for CBD Brands to discuss here in the UK. Because of the legal restrictions we can’t talk about potential health benefits or what is the appropriate dosage for specific purposes. However, working within the law we will provide as much information as we can to assist you.
Find your dosage
Please note the above is a recommended guide.
Safe Way can provide some general information. First-time users should begin with a 300ml oil, such as our Oral Spray. Regardless of what dosage you start with, we recommend that you use it consistently for about 30 days before increasing your dosage. That way your body has time to acclimatise to the CBD.
Weight, metabolism and age can all effect what dosage you require. Finding the perfect dosage for you takes time and testing, only you will know what works for you. There really isn’t a right or wrong way.
Multiple products simultaneously
Some of our users also find that using multiple low dose products simultaneously best serves their needs. It’s perfectly safe to use our Oral Drops and Muscle Balm at the same time for example, or indeed any combination of CBD oils, so long as you keep within our suggested dose. Finding the right method is part and parcel of your journey.
It’s perfectly safe to use multiple products simultaneously, some of our customers actually find using multiple low doses of different products works wonders for them. Combing a refreshing CBD drink alongside your favourite CBD bath bomb could be a perfect day ender.
CBD has been shown to be demonstrably safe at any dosage level.
The World Health Organization have filed an extensive report stating:
“The evidence from well controlled human experimental research indicates that CBD is not associated with abuse potential.”
Each of our products comes with a recommended dosage. We suggest using recommended dosages for our products, then adjusting to your Age and Weight.
You can adjust your dosage over time beyond or below all recommendations as everyone has a different optimal CBD experience.
